Description

An old-fashioned apple dessert with a sweet cinnamon crumb topping, perfect for serving warm.

Ingredients

Scale

4 cups peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
¾ cup all purpose flour
½ cup granulated white sugar
½ cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
pinch of salt

½ cup chilled salted butter, cut into chunks
vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375℉. Spray a 9-inch pie plate with nonstick spray or rub with butter.
  2. Add the apples to the pie plate and sprinkle the lemon juice evenly over them.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.
  4. Use a pastry blender or two knives to cut the chilled butter into the flour mixture until the consistency of coarse crumbs is reached.
  5. Sprinkle the flour mixture evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Cover the top of the dessert with a piece of foil to avoid excessive browning, and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes.
