7 Layer Bars

Easy 7 Layer Bars Recipe

  • Total Time: 1 hour 50 mins
  • Yield: 24 bars 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Classic 7 Layer Bars featuring a graham cracker crust, layers of chocolate and butterscotch chips, pecans, and coconut, all held together by sweetened condensed milk.

Ingredients

Scale

Cooking spray
21/2 cups graham cracker crumbs (about 20 crackers)
12 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch baking chips
1 cup white chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecans
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
11/3 cups unsweetened shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a 9 x 13-inch pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal. Lightly grease the parchment with cooking spray.
  2. Step 2: To make the crust, blend graham crackers in batches until they form very fine crumbs. Measure 2-1/2 cups of crumbs into a large bowl.
  3. Step 3: Add the salt and melted butter to the graham cracker crumbs and stir until the mixture is thick and fully combined.
  4. Step 4: Press the crumb mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Use the flat base of a measuring cup to create a firm, even crust.
  5. Step 5: Evenly layer the milk chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips, and chopped pecans over the crust. Use your hands to press these layers down firmly.
  6. Step 6: Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the chip and nut layer. Use the back of a spoon to spread it gently to cover the surface.
  7. Step 7: Sprinkle the shredded coconut over the top and press down lightly to help it adhere.
  8. Step 8: Bake for 23 to 28 minutes, until the edges are golden brown and the sweetened condensed milk is bubbling at the edges.
  9. Step 9: Let the bars cool completely at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours. To speed this up, you can refrigerate them after they have cooled for 20 minutes.
  10. Step 10: Once cooled, use the parchment overhang to lift the bars from the pan. For clean slices, cut with a hot, sharp knife by running it under hot water and drying it between cuts.

Notes

For note 1, you can substitute milk chocolate chips with semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips if you prefer a less sweet bar.

For note 2, ensure you are using butterscotch baking chips, not hard butterscotch candies.

For note 3, it is important to use sweetened condensed milk, not evaporated milk, as they are not interchangeable in this recipe.
