Description
A classic and comforting dessert featuring sweet, juicy blackberries cooked into a simple sauce and topped with soft, fluffy homemade dumplings.
Ingredients
Scale
3 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
1/4 cup white granulated sugar
2 cups water
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup white granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk
Instructions
- Step 1: In a saucepan, combine the blackberries, 1/4 cup of sugar, water, and nutmeg.
- Step 2: Bring the mixture to a boil on the stove, then reduce the heat to a medium boil and cover the pot.
- Step 3: While the blackberry mixture cooks, prepare the dumplings. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Step 4: Pour the milk into the flour mixture and mix with a spoon until a soft dough forms.
- Step 5: Lightly flour your hands. Pull off pieces of dough and roll them into balls about the size of a walnut. You should get 11 to 12 dumplings.
- Step 6: Uncover the pot and carefully drop the dumplings into the boiling blackberry mixture.
- Step 7: Replace the lid and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through.
- Step 8: Serve warm, ladling the sauce over the dumplings.
Notes
If the dumpling dough is too sticky to handle, add a little more flour until it can be rolled easily.
A serving is about 2 dumplings with sauce ladled over them.
This dessert is excellent served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
