Description
A classic apple pie with a delicious, crumbly streusel topping made with brown sugar, cinnamon, and pecans, all baked into a flaky pie crust.
Ingredients
For the Crust:
1 pie crust
For the Streusel Topping:
1½ cups all purpose flour
½ cup packed brown sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¾ cup (1½ sticks) cold butter, cut into pieces
½ cup chopped pecans
For the Apple Filling:
¾ cup granulated white sugar
2 tablespoons all purpose flour
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
6 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples
¼ cup heavy whipping cream
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat the oven to 450°F. Line a 9-inch pie plate with the pie crust and flute the edge.
- Step 2: Prepare the streusel by combining 1½ cups flour, the brown sugar, salt, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon in a large bowl. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, then stir in the pecans.
- Step 3: In another large bowl, prepare the filling by stirring together the granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of flour, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon.
- Step 4: Add the sliced apples to the sugar mixture and toss until they are fully coated.
- Step 5: Transfer the apple mixture into the pie crust, scraping the bowl to include any juices. Drizzle the heavy cream over the apples.
- Step 6: Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the filling, patting it down gently to cover the apples.
- Step 7: Place the pie on an upper oven rack and a foil-lined baking sheet on the lower rack to catch any drips. Bake for 15 minutes.
- Step 8: Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F and continue to bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly.
- Step 9: To prevent the topping from burning, loosely cover the pie with foil after it has baked for 30 minutes at the lower temperature.
- Step 10: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
A pastry blender or two knives can be used to cut the butter into the streusel’s dry ingredients.
Placing a foil-lined baking sheet on the lower oven rack helps to keep your oven clean by catching any filling that might bubble over.
