Ingredients
For the Cookies
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp orange zest
1/4 cup orange juice
1 egg yolk
1 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp gluten free all purpose flour with xanthan gum
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp sea salt
For the Orange Cream Cheese Frosting
4 oz cream cheese, room temperature
2 tbsp butter, room temperature
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tbsp orange juice, plus more if needed
1/2 tsp orange zest, plus more for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat and cook until golden brown, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and cool for 10 minutes.
- Whisk in brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla, orange zest, orange juice, and egg yolk until smooth.
- In another bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Combine dry ingredients with wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Scoop dough, roll into balls, and place on baking sheet with space between each.
- Bake for 12 to 14 minutes until edges are golden and centers slightly puffed.
- Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- Mix frosting ingredients until smooth and creamy.
- Frost cooled cookies and garnish with orange zest.
Notes
Use fresh orange juice and zest for the best flavor.
Allow browned butter to cool before mixing.
Chill dough if it feels too soft or sticky.
Do not frost cookies while warm.
Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
For dairy free, use plant based butter and cream cheese.
