Description
This perfect mashed potatoes and gravy recipe delivers creamy, buttery potatoes and rich, savory gravy. It’s a classic comfort food made with everyday ingredients and ideal for any meal.
Ingredients
For the Potatoes:
3 lbs. russet potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces (about 5–6 medium potatoes)
1 cup half and half
8 tbsp. salted butter, softened (one stick)
1/2 cup sour cream
1 tbsp. seasoned salt (such as Lawry’s)
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
Fresh chives for garnish, chopped (optional)
For the Gravy:
1 package McCormick Turkey Gravy Seasoning Mix (or your favorite gravy mix)
1 cup water (or substitute with half and half for richer flavor)
Instructions
- Boil the Potatoes: Add peeled and chopped potatoes to a large pot. Cover with cold water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 8-10 minutes until potatoes are fork-tender.
- Release the Steam: Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash for 2-3 minutes to let excess steam escape. This step is key for achieving a smooth consistency.
- Mash and Mix: Warm the half and half in the microwave for about 30-60 seconds. Add it to the potatoes along with the butter, sour cream, seasoned salt, and black pepper. Continue mashing until smooth and creamy. Add more half and half if needed.
- Make the Gravy: In a small saucepan, whisk the gravy mix with water or half and half. Heat over medium heat until slightly thickened, about 1-2 minutes.
- Serve: Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving dish. Top with warm gravy and garnish with chopped fresh chives if desired.
Notes
Use a potato ricer for the smoothest texture, or an electric mixer for convenience. Add fresh herbs to the gravy for extra flavor. Warm your liquids before mixing for the creamiest results.
