Ingredients

Scale

For the Cherry Filling:

5 to 6 cups cherries (fresh or frozen), pitted

1/4 cup granulated sugar (adjust based on cherry sweetness)

For the Topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

1 large egg, unbeaten

1/3 cup butter, melted

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare Cherries: In a bowl, mix the pitted cherries with 1/4 cup sugar. Tailor the sugar amount depending on the tartness or sweetness of your cherries.

Assemble in Baking Dish: Pour the cherry mixture into a greased 8×8-inch baking dish.

Make Topping: In a separate bowl, combine flour, remaining 1 cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and the unbeaten egg. Mix until the mixture becomes crumbly.

Add Topping to Cherries: Evenly sprinkle the crumbly topping over the cherries in the baking dish.

Add Butter: Drizzle the melted butter over the topping, ensuring even coverage.

Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the cherry filling is bubbly.

Serve: Allow to cool slightly before serving. Delicious when served warm, especially topped with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

Use thawed and drained cherries if frozen.

Adjust sugar to taste based on how tart your cherries are.

For added crunch, sprinkle in some chopped nuts.

Great with a homemade or store-bought vanilla ice cream topping.
